Future of Earth

space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Our planet is constantly changing in many ways. Some changes happen very slowly over millions of years. Other changes might happen much faster due to space events. Scientists study these changes to guess what Earth will look like in the future.

We look at the Sun, the air, and the ground. We also look at how living things interact with the world. Understanding these paths helps us see the long story of our home.

Many things will happen in a specific order as time goes on. First, the Sun will get steadily brighter. This extra light will change how the air and ground work together. This process will lower the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.

Around 600 million years from now, there may not be enough carbon dioxide for most plants. Without plants, most animals will not have food to eat. In one billion years, the Sun will be 10% brighter. This could cause the oceans to turn into steam in a moist greenhouse.

Later, the planet's magnetic shield may stop working. This could let the air leak away into space.

Humans are also changing the Earth right now. This period is called the Holocene extinction.

Human actions like changing habitats and climate change are causing many species to disappear. Since 1950, there has been a large loss of life called a biotic crisis. Some experts say 10% of species were lost by 2007. This change might last for five million years. If humans disappear, the planet will slowly return to a slower pace of natural change.

Space can also bring big risks to our world.

Asteroids or comets could hit the Earth and cause huge disasters. A big hit could create a cloud of dust that blocks the sun. This would make the land much colder for many months. Another risk is a supernova, which is a huge explosion of a star.

If a supernova happens near us, it could damage the ozone layer. This layer protects us from harmful rays from the Sun. Scientists think there might be 20 such explosions near Earth in the next two billion years.

Earth's surface and its place in space also move.

The plates under the ground move and might make a new supercontinent in 250 to 350 million years. The way the Earth tilts might even change wildly in the next 1.5 to 4.5 billion years. Even the Sun's own life has an end. In about 7.5 billion years, the Sun will enter a red giant phase. It will grow so large that it may swallow the Earth. By then, the surface will be so hot that it melts.
