Future

physical science Maturity 13-18 Next article →

The future is the period of time that follows the past and the present. Because of the laws of physics, the arrival of the future is considered inevitable. Everything that exists can be categorized as either permanent or temporary. Permanent things will exist forever, while temporary things will eventually end. In Western or Occidental views, time is often seen as a linear progression. This means the future is viewed as a projected timeline of events that are anticipated to occur.

In the field of physics, time is understood as the fourth dimension. Scientists describe spacetime as a stretchy fabric that can bend due to forces like gravity. In classical physics, the future is simply one half of a timeline that is the same for all observers. However, the theory of special relativity changed this understanding. It shows that the flow of time is relative to an observer's frame of reference. The faster an observer travels away from a reference object, the slower that object appears to move through time. This means the future is not an objective notion for everyone.

Modern physics introduces the concept of the absolute future, also called the future light cone. While people can move in three spatial dimensions, many physicists argue we can only move forward in time. Special relativity suggests a person could actually travel into the future by traveling at very high speeds. This effect is tiny under normal conditions, but space travel at high speeds changes the flow of time significantly. A person traveling near the speed of light for a short time might return to an Earth that is many years in the future. Some physicists also propose that wormholes or cosmic strings could theoretically allow for time travel. Physicist Michio Kaku noted that powering a machine to punch a hole in spacetime would require the energy of a star.

Philosophy offers several different ways to understand the existence of time. Presentism is the belief that only the present moment truly exists. Under this view, the past and the future are considered unreal or logical fictions. The opposite view is eternalism, which claims that the past and the future exist eternally. There is also the growing block theory of time. This theory postulates that the past and the present exist, but the future does not yet exist.

Historical thinkers have debated these ideas for centuries. Saint Augustine proposed that the present is a knife edge between the past and the future. He believed the present could not contain any extended period of time. He also suggested that God exists in eternity, outside of time. Later, William James argued that conscious experience is extended in time. He described time as a short duration that we are constantly and incessantly sensible of. These debates help scholars understand how humans perceive their place in the universe.

Religions also address the future through various specific lenses. Many religions study eschatology, which is the study of the end of time or the end of the world. This can include prophecies about the ultimate destiny of humanity. Other religions focus on karma or the concept of an afterlife. An afterlife is the continuation of a soul or spirit after physical death. Some traditions, like Buddhism, believe in reincarnation without referring to a God. Other views, like materialism, are skeptical of the supernatural and believe an afterlife is impossible.

Psychology explores how human behavior involves anticipation of the future. This is often seen through different mental outlooks. Optimism is a view that the world is a positive place. People with this outlook often believe that situations will work out for the best. Pessimism is the opposite, where a person emphasizes bad or undesirable outcomes. The word comes from Latin roots meaning "worst" and "bad." There is also the concept of hope, which is a belief in a positive outcome even when there is evidence to the contrary.

Finally, the future is a key part of how we use language. In English grammar, there are four different future tenses. The future tense describes actions that are expected to occur. The future continuous tense describes actions that will happen and continue for a period. The future perfect tense refers to actions that will be completed at a specific time. Lastly, the future perfect continuous tense describes actions that are expected to be continuing through a certain point in the future. These tools allow us to organize our thoughts about what is to come.
