Futabayama had a very smart way of fighting. He was an expert at the tachi-ai, which is the start of the match. He was great at receiving a charge and then countering it. One of his best moves was uwatenage, an overarm throw. He also had excellent balance during his bouts. He is believed to have never made a false start. Later, it was revealed he was actually blind in one eye. This was due to an injury he had when he was young.

His life in sumo began in 1927 when he was only 15. He was born in Usa and worked on fishing boats as a boy. He joined the Tatsunami stable to start his career. In 1932, he entered the top makuuchi division. He was promoted to a higher rank after some top wrestlers went on strike. This event was known as the Shunjuen Incident. He eventually became the head of the Tokitsukaze stable in 1941.
