Fula language

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Fula is a major Senegambian language spoken by approximately 36.8 million people. It exists as a continuum of various dialects stretching across 18 countries in West and Central Africa. Because of this wide reach, Fula serves as a lingua franca, or a common language, in many nations. This includes Guinea, Senegal, Mali, and Cameroon, among others. When counting all speakers, including those who use it as a second language, the total exceeds 95 million.

Linguistically, Fula belongs to the Atlantic geographic group within the Niger-Congo family. It is closely related to languages like Wolof and Serer. While it has many varieties, most people consider it a single language. Some researchers note that travelers can communicate easily across long distances. However, the variety is so broad that some organizations, like Ethnologue, treat the different dialects as separate languages. These dialects are often organized into four main regions: Western, Central, Niger and Nigeria, and Eastern.

The structure of Fula is built upon verbonominal roots. From these roots, speakers derive nouns, verbs, and modifiers. The language utilizes suffixes to modify the meaning of these roots. These suffixes often function similarly to prepositions in English. A unique feature is consonant mutation, where the initial consonant of a word changes. This often happens when a word shifts from a singular to a plural form. For example, in the Pular dialect, this mutation affects nouns but not verbs.

A defining characteristic of Fula is its robust noun class system. Most dialects use between 24 and 26 different noun classes. These classes are abstract categories used to group nouns. Some classes are based on semantic attributes, which are meanings related to the object's nature. For instance, one class is for long, stringy things, while another is for liquids. Other classes exist for big objects, strong rigid objects, or human traits. Interestingly, gender does not play a role in this system. Instead, gender is indicated through adjectives rather than the noun classes themselves.

Fula also features a complex system of pronouns and verb voices. The language distinguishes between inclusive and exclusive first-person plural pronouns. An inclusive pronoun includes the person being spoken to, while an exclusive pronoun leaves them out. The specific pronoun used depends on the noun class of the subject. Additionally, verbs are typically classified into three voices: active, middle, and passive. Some middle-voice verbs are reflexive, meaning the action refers back to the subject. For example, a root meaning "to wash" can change to mean "to wash oneself" in the middle voice.

History shows that Fula has been written using several different scripts. Historically, scholars used Ajami, which is a form of the Arabic alphabet. During the colonial era, the Latin script became more common. In the mid-1960s, UNESCO helped standardize a Latin-based orthography for the language. This version uses special "hooked" characters like ɓ, ɗ, ŋ, ɲ, and ƴ to represent specific sounds. These characters help distinguish meanings that standard Latin letters cannot.

A significant development occurred in 1989 with the creation of the Adlam script. This script was invented by two teenage brothers, Ibrahima and Abdoulaye Barry, from Guinea. They designed Adlam specifically to represent all the sounds of the Fula language accurately. The script consists of 28 letters, including 23 consonants and 5 vowels. It is written from right to left. This modern script provides a dedicated way for Fula speakers to preserve their written tradition. Through these various scripts and its massive speaker base, Fula remains a vital part of African communication and culture.
