Many people call him the "Father of Gymnastics." He wanted people to be strong in body and mind. He believed exercise could help his country.

Jahn invented many tools for sports. He made the rings and the high bar. He also made the parallel bars and the pommel horse.

In 1811, he opened an outdoor gym in Berlin. This was called a Turnplatz. Many young people joined his group. They used his ideas to build a sense of pride. His work helped start modern sports clubs.

Jahn lived a very busy life. He fought in a war against Napoleon. For his bravery, he won the Iron Cross. He also worked in the secret service.

Later, the leaders in his land did not like his ideas. They thought his clubs were too political. They closed his gym and put him in prison. He lived in many places after that.

Today, we see his name in many places. There is a large stone monument in St. Louis.
