A frequency mixer is a very useful electronic circuit.

It takes two different signals and mixes them together. This process creates new signals at the output. Usually, these new signals have frequencies that are the sum or the difference of the inputs. This way of moving signals between frequency ranges is called heterodyning. It is a vital tool for moving signals for easier transmission. It also helps with further signal processing in many devices.

How does this mixing actually work? The mixer creates a product from the two input signals. One way to do this is with passive mixers. These use diodes to work. Diodes have a special relationship between current and voltage. In a passive mixer, the output signal is always lower in power than the inputs. Another way is to use active mixers. These use devices like transistors or vacuum tubes. An active mixer can actually make the product signal stronger. It can also help keep the signals separate from noise.

There are different ways to build these circuits. Some are built with single parts called discrete components. Others are part of integrated circuits. You can even find them in hybrid modules. Engineers also look at how the signals are balanced. An unbalanced mixer lets both input signals pass through to the output. A single balanced mixer suppresses one of the inputs. A double balanced mixer is even more complex.

In this type, neither input signal appears at the output. Only the new product signal comes out.

Some mixers work by using a method called switching. This is like multiplying an input signal by a square wave. In a double balanced switching mixer, the smaller input signal is flipped or not flipped. This happens based on the phase of a local oscillator. This oscillator acts like a switch that alternates between +1 and -1. A single balanced switching mixer alternates between 0 and +1. This method can help achieve a lower noise figure. It can also provide a larger conversion gain for the signal.

Mixers are used in many things we use every day. A radio transmitter uses them to modulate a carrier signal. A communications receiver might use two different mixer stages. The first stage moves the signal to an intermediate frequency. The second stage helps with demodulation to find the original message. Mixers can also act as a product detector or a phase detector. They can even work as a frequency multiplier. This makes them essential for modern communication technology.
