Have you ever noticed how things repeat?

A pendulum swings back and forth. A heart beats in a steady rhythm. Frequency is a way to measure how often these things happen in a set amount of time.

Scientists use a unit called the hertz. We write this as Hz. One hertz means something happens one time every second. If a heart beats 120 times in one minute, its frequency is 2 hertz.

The time between each event is called the period. Frequency and period are opposites. If the frequency is high, the period is short.

Light also has a frequency. This determines its color. Red light has a low frequency. Violet light has a high frequency. Other waves, like radio waves, have even lower frequencies. X-rays have very high frequencies.

Sound is made of vibrations. The frequency of a sound tells us its pitch. Humans can hear sounds from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Some dogs can hear much higher sounds, up to 60,000 Hz.

Frequency counter

We can measure frequency with a tool called a frequency counter. It counts cycles and shows the number on a screen.
