French Renaissance architecture

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Long ago, kings in France changed how they built homes. This style is called French Renaissance architecture. It began in the late 1400s. Before this, buildings were mostly for defense. This new style was for comfort and beauty.

King Charles VIII saw lovely Italian gardens and buildings. He brought many skilled workers back to France. These workers included sculptors and architects. At first, French builders copied the Italian way. Later, they made the style more unique to France.

Many grand homes, called châteaux, sit in the Loire Valley. The Château de Chambord is a famous example. It has a special double spiral stairway. Some buildings also have lucarnes. These are decorative dormer windows on the roof.

Architects used pilasters to decorate walls. These are sculpted columns that look like they hold up the building. They are often just for show. This style uses straight lines and balance. It turned old fortresses into elegant places to live.
