During the Second World War, he became an expert at fighting submarines. People often called him "Johnnie Walker."

Walker led groups of ships to protect supply boats. He used clever new ways to find enemy submarines. One way was the "creeping attack." In this way, two ships worked together to track a submarine. He also used "barrage attacks." This is when many ships drop depth charges in one area.

Another way was the "hold down." This meant keeping a submarine deep underwater until it had to surface.

Walker commanded a ship called HMS Starling.
