Frank Lloyd Wright was a prolific American architect, designer, writer, and educator.

Over a creative career spanning 70 years, he designed more than 1,000 structures. His work influenced architectural movements throughout the twentieth century. Wright mentored hundreds of apprentices through his Taliesin Fellowship. He believed in a philosophy called organic architecture. This concept focused on designing in harmony with both humanity and the environment. This approach is famously seen in Fallingwater, built in 1935. Many experts call Fallingwater the best all-time work of American architecture.

Wright's design process was deeply integrated and holistic. He did not just design the walls and roofs of a building. He often designed the interior elements as well. This included leaded glass windows, floors, furniture, and even tableware.

He pioneered the Prairie School movement, which focused on specific aesthetic styles for homes. He also developed the concept of the Usonian home. This was part of his larger vision for urban planning called Broadacre City. His projects were incredibly diverse in scope and function. He designed offices, churches, schools, skyscrapers, hotels, and museums.

Wright's early life in rural Wisconsin shaped his unique perspective. He was born in 1867 in Richland Center. His mother, Anna Lloyd Jones, encouraged his artistic ambitions from a young age. She decorated his nursery with engravings of English cathedrals. As a child, Wright played extensively with Froebel Gifts. These were geometric wooden blocks shaped like cubes, spheres, and triangles.

Wright later noted that these geometric exercises stayed in his fingers for his entire life. His childhood was also marked by instability and financial hardship. His parents separated in 1881, and his father left the family in 1885.

His professional training began with civil engineering studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He left the university without a degree but later received an honorary doctorate in 1955. His earliest known work was the Unity Chapel in Wyoming, Wisconsin. He helped with the interior drawings and construction while apprenticing for Joseph Lyman Silsbee. In 1887, Wright moved to Chicago to find work. He worked as a draftsman for Silsbee before joining the firm Adler & Sullivan.

At Adler & Sullivan, he became an official apprentice. He worked closely with Louis Sullivan, whom he called his "dear master."

During his time at Adler & Sullivan, Wright gained significant design responsibility. He handled residential design work, often during his evening and weekend overtime hours. While he claimed total responsibility for these designs, historians suggest Sullivan influenced their overall forms. Wright opened his own successful Chicago practice in 1893. He later established a studio in his Oak Park, Illinois, home in 1898.

His career was marked by both professional success and personal turbulence. His personal life often made headlines due to his marriages and a tragic event at his Taliesin estate in 1914.

Wright's global influence is reflected in the vast scale of his achievements. He designed major commercial projects like the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.

He also created unique workspaces like the Johnson Wax Building in Racine, Wisconsin.

In 1991, the American Institute of Architects recognized him as the greatest American architect of all time. In 2019, a selection of his works was named a World Heritage Site. This designation, known as The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, honors his lasting impact on the world.

Wright's legacy connects architecture to many other fields of study. His work bridges the gap between fine art and functional engineering. His writings and lectures helped spread his ideas across the United States and Europe. He treated architecture as a way to integrate human life with the natural world. His concepts of urban planning and residential design continue to be studied by modern architects. Through his many buildings and his many students, his philosophy remains a vital part of architectural history.
