During World War II, Kameny served in the United States Army. He joined the Army on May 18, 1943, to study engineering. At first, he was part of a special training program for students. However, the military later sent him to the frontlines in Europe as an infantry private. After the war, he finished his studies in physics. He eventually became an astronomer and worked for the U.S. Army Map Service in Washington, D.C.

In 1957, Kameny faced a very difficult and unfair time in his life. The government fired him from his job because he was gay. This happened during a period known as the Lavender Scare. Kameny did not stay quiet about this unfair treatment. He filed a legal appeal to fight his firing. This was the first time someone used a civil rights claim based on sexual orientation in a U.S. court.

His work helped change how people thought about rights and fairness. He fought to stop the government from treating people differently because of who they loved. In 1971, he became the first openly gay person to run for the United States Congress. He also helped change medical rules about homosexuality. Even though he lost his job after being fired, his courage helped start a whole new movement.
