Francoist Spain was a long period of history in Spain. It began in 1939 and lasted until 1975. During this time, the country was called the Spanish State. A leader named Francisco Franco held almost all the power. He was a dictator, which means he made most decisions alone.

He did not need to ask a parliament for help with most laws. This made his government one of the most centralized in Europe. He ruled with more daily power than many other famous leaders of that time.

The government worked through a single political party. This party was called the Falange, which was part of the National Movement.

The Falange helped manage local government and trade unions. However, Franco kept most of the real power for himself. He also shared influence with the Army and the Catholic Church.

The government was very strict about how people lived and thought.

History shows that this era began after a civil war. The Nationalists won the war and took control of the country.

To keep control, the regime punished people who disagreed with them. They targeted those who wanted free elections or more rights for women. Many people were sent to prison or forced to leave Spain. Some Spaniards even ended up in Nazi concentration camps.

It was a very difficult time for many families.

During World War II, Spain stayed officially neutral. This means they did not join the fighting directly.

However, the regime supported the Axis powers, like Germany. Franco even met with Adolf Hitler at a place called Hendaye in 1940. They talked about Spain joining the war, but the meeting failed. Because of these ties, other countries stayed away from Spain for a few years.

Things changed in the 1950s when the economy began to grow.

By the late 1950s, Spain began to change its ways. New money from other countries helped the economy grow very fast.

People began to buy more things, and life became more modern. In 1969, Franco chose Juan Carlos of Bourbon to be his successor. When Franco died in 1975, Juan Carlos became the King of Spain.

This helped Spain move away from a dictatorship. The country began a transition to become a democracy with elected leaders.
