He ruled the nation from 1939 until his death in 1975. This era is frequently called Francoist Spain. Franco rose to power by leading the Nationalist forces during the Spanish Civil War. His leadership was characterized by a highly centralized and authoritarian government. He shaped the political, social, and economic landscape of mid-20th-century Spain.

Franco’s journey began with an early military education. He entered the Toledo Infantry Academy in 1907 at only fourteen years old. He was much younger than the typical cadet. After graduating in 1910, he served in Morocco. This region was a Spanish protectorate at the time. During the Rif War, Franco gained fame as a skilled officer. He served in the Spanish Foreign Legion, which consisted of elite shock troops. In 1916, he survived a serious gunshot wound to the abdomen. His survival led many to believe he was protected by God.

His military success led to rapid promotions through the ranks. By 1926, at age 33, he became a brigadier general. This made him one of the youngest generals in Europe. In 1936, a military coup attempted to overthrow the Second Spanish Republic. This event sparked the Spanish Civil War. The coup failed to take the whole country immediately. However, it created two opposing sides. Franco commanded the African colonial army for the Nationalist faction. After several other rebel leaders died, Franco became the sole leader. He was appointed generalissimo and head of state in 1936.

The Nationalist victory in 1939 established Franco’s long rule. His government was built on several core pillars. These included nationalism, national Catholicism, and anti-communism. He also practiced anti-freemasonry. To unify his supporters, he created the FET y de las JONS. This group was also known as the Movimiento Nacional. During World War II, Spain remained officially neutral. However, Franco supported the Axis powers. This support damaged Spain's international reputation during that period.

Franco’s regime was marked by significant human cost and repression. The government used forced labour and concentration camps against political opponents. These actions led to many deaths. Estimates suggest at least 30,000 people died from post-war repression. Some scholars suggest the number could exceed 200,000. When combined with wartime killings, the total death toll is estimated between 100,000 and 350,000.

Despite this repression, Spain also experienced a period of economic change. During the Cold War, Franco adopted technocratic and economically liberal policies. This led to a period of rapid growth called the "Spanish miracle." His regime transitioned from a totalitarian state to an authoritarian one. This new version of the government allowed for limited pluralism. Because of his anti-communist stance, he gained support from the West. The United States, in particular, became a supporter.

In his later years, Franco's health began to decline. He struggled with Parkinson's disease during the 1960s. In 1973, he resigned as prime minister due to his age and illness. However, he kept his roles as head of state and commander-in-chief. He died in 1975 at the age of 82.

Before his death, he restored the monarchy to Spain. King Juan Carlos succeeded him. The King led the country through a transition to democracy. Franco was entombed in the Valley of the Fallen.

Today, historians continue to debate the exact nature of Franco's regime. Some scholars describe it as a traditional military dictatorship. Others argue it was a fascist regime. There is also debate about whether it was a "fascistised" state. His legacy remains controversial because of these contradictions. His rule brought both brutal repression and economic prosperity. These two sides continue to shape how people view Spanish history.
