He is best known for his work in genetics. This is the study of genes. Genes are the tiny parts of our cells that hold instructions for our bodies. Collins spent much of his life hunting for these genes. He wanted to find which ones cause different diseases. His work has helped doctors understand how many illnesses work. This makes science much more useful for helping sick people.

One of his most important jobs was leading the Human Genome Project. This was a massive effort to map all human genes. To do this, scientists had to read the entire human genome. The genome is like a giant instruction book for a person. In June 2000, Collins and others announced a working draft of this book. It took until 2003 to finish the full version. Collins said seeing this for the first time was truly awe-inspiring. It felt like seeing the very first glimpse of our own instructions.

Collins started his journey in science in a very different way. He was born in 1950 in Staunton, Virginia. As a young student, he actually wanted to be a chemist. He did not think biology was very interesting at first. He earned a chemistry degree from the University of Virginia in 1970. Later, he studied physical chemistry at Yale University. A class in biochemistry changed his mind about biology. He then went to medical school at the University of North Carolina. He earned his medical degree there in 1977.

Throughout his career, Collins held many important roles. He worked as a professor at the University of Michigan. He also led the National Human Genome Research Institute. From 2009 to 2021, he was the director of the National Institutes of Health. This is a huge group in Bethesda, Maryland. He served under three different U.S. presidents during his time there. He even served as an Acting Science Advisor to President Joe Biden. He has received many honors, like the National Medal of Science.

Collins also cares deeply about how science and people live together. He helped pass laws to protect genetic privacy. This keeps people from being treated unfairly because of their genes. He also started groups to help science grow in Africa. Collins writes books about science and his religious faith. He believes that science and religion can exist together. He wants everyone to have a chance to learn and stay healthy. His work connects the tiny world of genes to the whole world of people.
