A foundation is a very important part of any structure. It connects a building to the ground or sometimes to water.

The main job is to transfer loads from the building to the earth. This helps spread the weight over a large area. Spreading the weight stops the soil from being overloaded. If the soil is overloaded, the building might sink unevenly. This uneven sinking is called differential settlement.

Foundations work in a few different ways to keep things steady. Engineers use soil and rock mechanics to design them.

They must also anchor the building against natural forces. These forces include wind, floods, and even earthquakes. A good foundation provides a level surface for construction. It can also prevent lateral movements, which are side-to-side shifts. Sometimes, foundations must deal with soil that swells or shrinks. This often happens because of changes in temperature.

People have been building foundations for a very long time. In the past, some people used wood in contact with the ground.

This is sometimes called post in ground construction. Other people used timber pilings for soft or wet ground. The simplest type is a padstone. A padstone is a single stone that spreads weight. It also raises timber off the ground. In marine building, people used a crisscross of beams called grillage.

There are two main types of modern foundations. Shallow foundations are often called footings. They are usually buried about one meter into the soil.

One kind is a slab-on-grade foundation. This is a concrete slab placed at the surface. Deep foundations are used to reach stronger layers of soil. They go through weak topsoil to reach subsoil or rock. These can include drilled shafts, caissons, or screw piles.

Deep foundations are used for very large structures. One type is a monopile foundation. This uses a single, large element to support weight and wind.

These are used for offshore wind farms in the ocean. For example, a wind farm near England used many monopiles in 2008. Each pile was 4.74 meters in diameter. They sat in water up to 16 meters deep. Some foundations even sit on water as floating barges. This is helpful for certain bridges and buildings.
