Formaldehyde

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Formaldehyde is a colorless gas with a sharp, stinging smell. It is a very important building block for many things we use every day. Factories use it to create industrial resins for making particle board and plastics. It also helps make paper, textiles, and synthetic fibers. In 2024, the world produced about 26 million tons of it every year. Because it is so useful, it is a starting point for many other chemical compounds.

This gas can change into different forms very easily. When it is a gas, it has a sweet but irritating scent. If you mix it with water, it forms a liquid called formalin. This liquid is often used in labs to preserve tissue samples. Scientists often add a little methanol to the mix to keep it stable. Sometimes, the gas turns into a white solid called paraformaldehyde. This happens through a process called polymerization, where molecules link together.

People have been studying this substance for a long time. A Russian chemist named Aleksandr Butlerov first discovered it in 1859. He originally called it "dioxymethylen" because his math was not yet perfect. Later, August Wilhelm von Hofmann identified it as an aldehyde. He found he could make it by passing methanol vapor over hot platinum wire. His method was very clever and helped lead to how we make it today.

Formaldehyde is found in many surprising places. It occurs naturally in the atmosphere and even in outer space. In 1969, it was the first organic molecule ever detected in the interstellar medium. It can also be found inside our own bodies. Living things make it during their normal metabolism. In humans, it is found in the blood at concentrations of about 50 micromolar. Our bodies are very good at changing it into formic acid quickly.

Even though it is useful, we must handle it with great care. Formaldehyde is classified as a group 1 carcinogen, which means it can cause cancer. It can also cause irritation to your skin or your lungs if you breathe it in. Some people use patch tests to see if it causes skin irritation.
