This star system is actually a triple star system. 
Many years ago, people gave this star many different names. 
Scientists have found many interesting facts about this system. 
For a long time, people thought they saw a planet. In 2008, the Hubble Space Telescope imaged an object called Fomalhaut b. People thought it was a planet near the outer ring. They even gave it the name Dagon. However, new studies in 2019 and 2023 changed this idea. 
Fomalhaut is a bright star located in the southern constellation of Piscis Austrinus, also known as the Southern Fish. 

Fomalhaut is much larger and more powerful than our Sun. Its mass is approximately 1.92 times that of the Sun. The star's diameter is roughly 1.84 times larger than the Sun's diameter. Its luminosity, or total brightness, is about 16.6 times greater than our Sun. The surface temperature of the star is around 7,000 Kelvin. Fomalhaut is also considered slightly metal-deficient. This means it has a lower percentage of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. For example, one study measured its iron abundance at 93% of the Sun's level. Other studies have suggested values as low as 46%.
This star is part of a triple star system. 
Fomalhaut is surrounded by several complex debris disks. These are rings of dust and particles orbiting the star. The innermost disk is a high-carbon ash disk located only 0.1 AU from the star. There is also a disk of larger particles with an inner edge between 0.4 and 1 AU. The outermost disk is a large, donut-shaped structure called a torus. 
These disks are very active environments. The presence of fluffy, micrometer-sized dust suggests constant replenishment. This happens because stellar radiation pressure would otherwise blow the dust away quickly. The dust is replenished by constant collisions between planetesimals, which are large space rocks. It is estimated that these collisions happen about 2,000 times every day. 
For many years, astronomers believed they had found a planet in this system. In 2008, the Hubble Space Telescope imaged an object called Fomalhaut b. This object was orbiting just inside the outer debris ring. Scientists even gave it the name Dagon through an International Astronomical Union contest. However, newer studies in 2019 and 2023 changed this conclusion. Data suggests that Fomalhaut b is not a planet. Instead, it is an expanding region of debris. This debris was created by a massive collision between two large planetesimals. The cloud is currently moving on a hyperbolic orbit, meaning it will leave the system.
Fomalhaut remains a key subject for studying the formation of solar systems. The presence of protoplanetary dust disks suggests that planets may still be forming or have recently formed. Recent observations from the James Webb Space Telescope have helped clarify the nature of the disks and the objects within them.
