Old planes used heavy cables and pulleys to fly.

These metal parts were very heavy. They also took up a lot of space.

Fly-by-wire is a new way to fly. It uses electric signals instead of heavy cables.

When a pilot moves a stick, the computer reads the move. The computer then sends a signal to the plane. It tells the parts of the plane how to move. This is called a feedback loop.

In this loop, the computer checks the plane's position. It makes sure the plane does exactly what the pilot wants.

This system helps in many ways. It can make a plane lighter. Lighter planes use less power to fly. The computer also helps keep the plane steady. It can stop mistakes before they happen. This is called envelope protection. It keeps the plane in a safe zone.

Some planes use digital systems. These use computers to read many sensors at once. These sensors measure things like height and speed. This makes flying much safer and easier.
