She became famous during the early days of silent films. In those years, movies were quite different than they are today. Most performers did not even get their names on the screen. People only saw the name of the film company. Turner helped change this way of doing things. She became known as the "Vitagraph Girl." This name made her a very popular person to watch. She was a major draw for audiences in America.

Making movies was a new and changing job for her. She joined the Vitagraph Studios in 1906. Her very first film was called How to Cure a Cold. It came out on June 8, 1907. At first, she was a star and a part-time seamstress. In 1907, her pay went up to $22 every week. This was a big deal for a performer then. She worked hard to become a leading lady. She eventually became one of the first actors to have her name used by her studio.

Turner did much more than just act in front of a camera. She was a very creative person in the film world. She wrote screenplays, which are the stories used for movies. She also directed many of her own films. Some of her movies were funny comedies. She even started her own company called Turner Films. Through her company, she made more than thirty short movies.

One of her famous comedies was named Daisy Doodad's Dial.

Her life took her to many different places. In 1913, she left the United States to move to England. She went there with her friend, the director Laurence Trimble. In London, she performed in music halls. During World War I, she used her skills to entertain Allied troops. She eventually returned to the United States after the war ended. Later, she moved to Hollywood in 1924. Even though she was older, she kept working in the film industry. She appeared in more than 160 motion pictures during her long career.

Turner's life shows how much the movie business grew. She started when actors were almost invisible to the public. By the end of her life, she had seen many changes. She acted in small roles on Broadway in 1928. She also worked at MGM in the 1930s. She spent her final years in a special community for film workers. She died in Woodland Hills, California, at the age of 61. Her long journey helped shape the way we see movie stars today.
