Flannel

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Flannel is a soft and woven fabric used for many things. People use it to make warm blankets and cozy bed sheets. It is also a great choice for sleepwear and clothing. You might see it used for tartan clothes or even baby clothes. Some people think flannel must have a plaid pattern. However, flannel is just the name of the cloth itself. A shirt can be plaid without being made of flannel.

Making flannel involves a special way of weaving yarn. It can be made using a plain weave or a twill weave. Makers can use wool, cotton, or even synthetic fibers. To make it extra soft, they use a mechanical process called brushing. A fine metal brush rubs the fabric to raise tiny fibers. This creates a fuzzy layer on the cloth called a nap. Some flannel is not brushed at all. It stays soft because the yarn is spun very loosely.

Flannel has a very long history that goes back many years. People in Wales knew of similar fabrics as early as the 16th century. Back then, it was called "Welsh cotton." Even though it had that name, it was actually a coarse wool. In the 1800s, many Welsh towns made this cloth. Towns like Newtown, Hay on Wye, and Llanidloes were busy making it. The Drapers Company of Shrewsbury helped sell these Welsh clothes.

In the United States, flannel became popular during the Civil War. Soldiers used it for sturdy coats and undershirts. A man named Hamilton Carhartt helped make it very famous in America. He opened a special textile plant in Detroit in 1889. Later, flannel became popular in sports like cricket. In 1957, a designer named Sybil Connolly made a famous red skirt. This skirt was inspired by traditional Irish peasant kilts.

There are many different kinds of flannel for different jobs. Flannelette is a cotton fabric that mimics the soft texture of flannel. Some people make "vegetable flannel" using fibers from the Scots pine tree. In the 1990s, flannel shirts became a big part of teen fashion. They were part of a style called grunge. Bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam helped make this style popular. Today, we still enjoy the softness of this wonderful fabric.
