In England, the Magna Carta of 1215 included a clause regarding the removal of the king's weirs. Later, during the reign of King Edward III, statutes were passed to regulate them. In 1535, King Henry VIII appointed commissioners to oversee the "putting-down" of weirs. These officials removed weirs that blocked ships or caused flooding. They also removed those that destroyed fish stocks. The Salmon Fishery Act of 1861 eventually banned their use, unless their use could be traced back to before 1215.
