The scale of these structures can be quite massive. In Japan, 160 stone weirs were in use along the Shimabara Peninsula by 1707. Some of these structures reached lengths of 360 metres. In the Bolivian Amazon, the artificial landscape of weirs and canals covers over 700 square kilometers. These earthworks likely supported large, dense populations. In Taiwan, about 500 stone weirs still survive today. These structures demonstrate how deeply fishing technology is integrated into human landscapes.

Throughout history, weirs have also been subjects of legal and social conflict. In medieval Europe, V-shaped river weirs often caused disputes between land tenants and different classes of users. In England, the Magna Carta of 1215 included a clause regarding the removal of the king's weirs. Later, during the reign of King Edward III, statutes were passed to regulate them. In 1535, King Henry VIII appointed commissioners to oversee the "putting-down" of weirs. These officials removed weirs that blocked ships or caused flooding. They also removed those that destroyed fish stocks. The Salmon Fishery Act of 1861 eventually banned their use, unless their use could be traced back to before 1215.

Today, the study of weirs connects us to ancient migrations and environmental management. The stone weirs of the Austronesian peoples are found across many islands, from Taiwan to New Zealand. They represent a shared ancestral technology used by seafaring peoples. Even as modern fishing changes, these ancient patterns still influence how we interact with tidal zones. Whether using stone, wood, or bamboo, the weir remains a fundamental way to harness the power of moving water.
