Fiscal conservatism is a way of thinking about money and government.

People in this group believe in small government. They want the government to spend less money. They also want lower taxes for people. This helps keep the country's debt low. These ideas come from a way of thinking called classical liberalism.

There are three main groups of fiscal conservatives. Deficit hawks want to balance the budget. They think too much debt is bad for the future. A second group wants to cut taxes. They think lower taxes help the economy grow. A third group focuses on cutting spending. They believe the main cost is how much the government spends.

History shows many leaders used these ideas. President Calvin Coolidge had policies that helped the economy grow in the 1920s.

President Jimmy Carter helped reduce the nation's debt. In 1978, he signed a law to deregulate airlines. This meant the government had less control over flight prices. Ronald Reagan also used these ideas. He cut many taxes during his time as president.
