A fire station is a place for fire trucks.

It also stores hoses and tools. Most stations have a large garage. This garage holds at least one fire engine.

Some stations have workers who stay there all day. These are called career firefighters. They have rooms to sleep and work in. An alarm tells them when there is an emergency. Many old stations have living rooms above the garage. They used a pole to slide down fast. Now, many new stations put the rooms on the same floor.

Other stations are not full-time. These use volunteer firefighters. They come to help when they hear a siren or pager. These stations may have a library or a trophy wall.

Stations often have tall towers. A hose tower helps hoses dry so they do not rot. A drill tower is for practice. Long ago, people used towers to look for fires. Workers also clean tools and train at the station. Some stations host events for the public too.
