It is known as one of the most difficult works in literature. Joyce spent seventeen years writing this book. He first shared parts of it in 1924. At that time, he called the pieces "fragments from Work in Progress." The full book was finally published on 4 May 1939. This long journey of writing was a huge task for him.

Joyce used a very special way to build his sentences. He took English and changed it in many ways. He combined words from many different languages into his own style. Some people think he did this to mimic a dream. In a dream, memories and places often mix together. This style is called metaphor mixing.

It makes the book feel like a half-awakened state.

Writing the book was a slow and hard job. Joyce felt very tired after finishing his earlier book, Ulysses. He did not write any prose for a whole year. In 1923, he wrote a small sketch about a king. Later, he wrote sketches called "Tristan and Isolde" and "Saint Patrick and the Druid." He also wrote a sketch called "Here Comes Everybody." This sketch introduced the main character, HCE.

Many readers found the book very hard to understand. Some critics were even angry about it. They thought the book was pointless or lacked rules. However, Joyce insisted that every syllable was justified. His friends, like Maria and Eugène Jolas, gave him support. They published parts of the book in their magazine. Other supporters even wrote essays to help people appreciate it.

The story follows the Earwicker family. The father is called HCE. The mother is ALP. They have three children named Shem, Shaun, and Issy. The book has seventeen chapters in four parts. It has a special cyclical structure. This means the story moves in a circle. The very last line is unfinished. It connects directly back to the first line of the book.
