Filasterea are tiny living things. They are made of only one cell.

Their name comes from words meaning "thread star." This is because of how they look. They are small and round. They have long parts that stick out. We call these parts filopodia.

These thin parts help them grab food. They also help them stick to things.

Scientists study these tiny cells. They want to know how animals began. Filasterea are close relatives to animals.

Some types live in the ocean. One type, called Ministeria vibrans, eats bacteria. Other types live in fresh water. One kind lives inside a snail. Scientists have studied the genes of these cells. They have studied species like Capsaspora owczarzaki. They also studied Pigoraptor vietnamica. These studies help us learn about the first animals. We do not see many of them in the wild. They may not be very common in nature.
