In these games, two or more characters fight each other. Most battles happen one-on-one. Players use fast button presses to perform special attacks. They can also chain attacks together. These long strings of moves are called combos.

Most games show health bars at the top of the screen. A character loses when their health bar reaches zero. This is called a knockout. Some games have different ways to win. In Virtua Fighter, you can win with a ring-out. This happens if you push a fighter out of the arena.

Players must use many skills to win. They can block to stay safe. Some players use a move called parrying. This lets them attack right after a block. Players also use strategy to predict what their opponent will do. This is called countering. Some players stay far away to keep the opponent at a distance. This style is called zoning. Others play very fast to overwhelm the other person. This is called rushdown. Fighting games have been popular since the 1980s and 1990s.
