Most road traffic enters Fife by crossing one of four bridges. These include the Queensferry Crossing and the Tay Road Bridge. The land features rolling farmland and hills. Some of these hills, like the Lomond Hills, were once volcanoes. The highest point in the area is called West Lomond.

Many people live in the southern part of Fife. This area is more crowded than the north. It contains the largest settlement, which is the city of Dunfermline. Other important towns here are Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes.

Glenrothes is the administrative centre for the area. It is also where the Fife Council is based. In the north, the land is less crowded. The largest town in the north is St Andrews. It sits right on the north-east coast.

Fife has a very long and famous history. Long ago, it was one of the major Pictish kingdoms. It was known as Fib or Fif. Because of this, people still call it the Kingdom of Fife.

The coast had many small harbours and fishing fleets. During the 19th century, Fife became a centre for heavy industry. Many people moved to towns like Cowdenbeath to work in coal mines. Later, Kirkcaldy became a world centre for making linoleum. Today, the area is known for many things, including the University of St Andrews. This is one of the oldest universities in the whole world.
