arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

FIDE is a huge group that brings the whole world together through chess. It is an international organization based in Switzerland. Its name is a French acronym. The group's motto is "We are one Family." This motto shows how much they value togetherness. FIDE connects 201 different member federations from all over the globe.

It acts as the main governing body for international chess competitions. Because of its work, the International Olympic Committee recognizes FIDE as a supreme body for the game.

FIDE has many important jobs to keep the game fair. They define the official rules for how chess is played. This includes how the pieces move on the board. They also set rules for how international matches are run. FIDE calculates Elo ratings to show a player's skill level. They also award special titles like Grandmaster to players who achieve great things.

They even award titles to people who create or solve chess problems. Some people are even trained as International Arbiters to oversee top matches.

Organizing big tournaments is a major part of what FIDE does. Their most famous event is the World Chess Championship. This event has been held since 1948. The current World Chess Champion is Gukesh Dommaraju.

FIDE also holds championships for women, juniors, and seniors. They host contests for players with disabilities too. Another big event is the Chess Olympiad, which is a tournament for national teams. This event has been held every two years since 1927. FIDE also organizes the World Team Championship for the best teams from the Olympiad.

Finding a new champion is a long and careful process. FIDE organizes the Candidates Tournament to find a challenger. This challenger then faces the reigning World Champion. To get to the Candidates, players must first compete in qualifying events. These include the Chess World Cup and the FIDE Grand Prix.

There is also the Grand Swiss Tournament. These steps ensure that only the very best players reach the top level. This structure helps keep the competition organized and exciting for everyone.

FIDE has a long history that began in Paris, France. It was officially founded in 1924. Before this, many different groups tried to start an international federation. Some attempts happened in 1904 and 1914.

After World War I, people worked hard to build a strong group. In the early years, FIDE had very little money and power. However, it grew much larger over time. Today, FIDE manages many programs, like the Chess for Freedom program. They even give out the Svetozar Gligoric Award for fair play. This shows how the organization has grown from a small group into a global leader.
