Leonardo Fibonacci was a very talented mathematician from the Republic of Pisa.

He was born around the year 1170 to a man named Guglielmo. His father was a merchant who worked in a place called Bugia. This city is in a country we now call Algeria. As a young boy, Fibonacci traveled there with his father. While living in Bugia, he learned a new way to use numbers. This system was known as the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. It used ten digits and included the number zero.

In Europe, most people used Roman numerals to count. These old numbers made math a very hard job. Fibonacci saw that the Hindu-Arabic system was much better. It used a place-value system to make calculations easy. He wrote a famous book in 1202 called *Liber Abaci*. This book showed how to use these new numbers for business. It helped people with bookkeeping and changing money. It also helped people calculate interest and weights. This new way of working helped banking grow in Europe.

Fibonacci was a guest at the court of Emperor Frederick II. The Emperor loved science and math very much. A man named John of Palermo asked Fibonacci to solve math puzzles. These puzzles were based on works from Arab mathematicians. Fibonacci also wrote other books like *Practica Geometriae* in 1220. This book was about measuring areas and volumes. He even wrote a book called *Flos* in 1225. This book was dedicated to the Emperor. These writings helped spread important ideas across the land.

One of his most famous ideas is a special number pattern. This is often called the Fibonacci sequence. He used this pattern to solve a problem about rabbits. He looked at how a population of rabbits might grow. In this pattern, you add the last two numbers to get the next one. Fibonacci started his list with 1, 2, and 3. He wrote the numbers all the way up to 233. One copy of his work even goes up to 377. Indian mathematicians had described this pattern much earlier, in the sixth century.

Many math ideas today still use his name. For example, there is a thing called the Brahmagupta–Fibonacci identity. There is also a method called the Fibonacci search technique. Even a small space rock is named asteroid 6765 Fibonacci. In the city of Pisa, there is a statue of him. It sits in a place called the Camposanto. He helped change how the whole world thinks about numbers. His work made business and math much faster for everyone.
