He was born around the year 1170. As a boy, he traveled to North Africa. There, he learned a new way to count. This was the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. It used ten digits and the number zero.

At that time, people in Europe used Roman numerals. Roman numerals are hard to use for math. Fibonacci saw that the new system was much better. It used place-value to make math easier. In 1202, he wrote a book called *Liber Abaci*. This book taught people how to use these new numbers. It helped with business, like counting money and interest. This helped banking grow in Europe.

Fibonacci also shared a special pattern of numbers. This is called the Fibonacci sequence. He found it while solving a problem about rabbits. In this pattern, each number is the sum of the two before it. He started his list with 1, 2, and 3. He carried the math up to the number 233. Many math ideas today still use his name.
