Earlier electric cars used heavy lead-acid batteries. These batteries made cars slow on hills and limited their range. Porsche solved this by creating a series-hybrid system. In this design, an internal combustion engine from Daimler drove a generator. This generator then powered electric motors located inside the wheel hubs. A small battery pack acted only as a backup. This system allowed for greater speed and range. The vehicle even won the Exelberg Rally in 1901.

Porsche held leadership roles at several major companies. In 1906, he became the chief designer for Austro-Daimler. He designed the "Prince Henry" car, which won the first three places in a major trial. By 1916, he was a managing director. He later moved to Stuttgart to work for Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft. While there, he designed successful racing cars like the Mercedes-Benz SSK. This model used superchargers to dominate motor racing in the 1920s. In 1931, he founded his own consulting firm, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH.

During the 1930s, Porsche's work shifted toward government commissions. In 1934, he received a contract to design a "people's car."
