Felix Bloch was a famous scientist who studied physics. Physics is the study of how the world works. He was born on October 23, 1905, in Zurich, Switzerland. His parents were Gustav Bloch and Agnes Mayer. Felix loved math because it had clarity and beauty. He also learned to play the piano by age eight.

Bloch did important work with tiny particles. He studied how electrons move in crystals. He also studied ferromagnetism, which is how some materials act like magnets. He even described things called Bloch walls. These are the boundaries between magnetic areas. He also helped develop nuclear magnetic resonance. This is a way to study the tiny parts of an atom.

His journey into science started very early. He began studying at ETH Zurich when he was only 15. He later moved to the University of Leipzig. There, he became the first graduate student for Werner Heisenberg. He earned his doctorate in 1928. His thesis used waves to describe how electrons move. This was a big step for science.

Many people know his name because of his big awards. In 1952, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He shared this prize with Edward Purcell. They won for their work with nuclear magnetic induction. This work is the reason we have MRI machines today. In 1954, he became the first director-general of CERN. He died in Zurich on September 10, 1983.
