Fasting is the act of not eating for a period of time. Sometimes, people also choose not to drink any liquids. This can happen for many different reasons in our world. Some people fast to help their bodies or for medical tests. Others fast because of their religious beliefs or to show a protest. It is a way to change how the body works.

When a person fasts, their body goes through many changes. After eating a meal, the body spends about three to five hours absorbing it. Once the food is gone, the body enters a fasting state. In early fasting, the body uses a process called gluconeogenesis to make energy. Eventually, the body switches to ketosis to find new energy. This means ketones replace glucose as the main fuel for the brain. During long fasts, the body may also lose important minerals like sodium and potassium.

People have used fasting throughout history for many important goals. In 1968, the leader César Chávez used a 25-day fast to promote nonviolence. He saw these spiritual fasts as a way to change himself. In 1981, a man named Bobby Sands took part in a hunger strike in Northern Ireland. He was protesting for better rights for prisoners. This strike was very serious and lasted for many days. These historical examples show how fasting can be used to make a powerful statement.

Many religions have specific rules for when and how to fast. In Islam, Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan from dawn until sunset. In Judaism, Yom Kippur is a 25-hour fast that includes no food or liquid. Christians often fast during the season of Lent. In the Catholic Church, people may also fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints skip two meals every month. They give the money they saved to help people in need.

Fasting is also a tool used by doctors in hospitals. A doctor might ask a patient to fast before a surgery. This is done to prevent a person from vomiting while they are under anesthesia. Fasting is also used before medical tests, like checking cholesterol levels. This helps doctors get a clear baseline for a person's health. While some people use fasting for weight loss, it must be done carefully. Doctors watch for things like refeeding syndrome, which can happen if someone eats too much too quickly after a long fast.
