A facies is a group of rocks with unique traits. These traits can be color or shape. They can also be how the rock is made. A facies includes chemical and biological features. This helps us tell one rock from another.

There are different kinds of facies. Some are called lithofacies. These focus on grain size and minerals. Others are called biofacies. These focus on fossils found in the rock. Geologists also study palynofacies. These are groups of tiny organic fossils.

Scientists use Walther's law to study rocks. This law was named after Johannes Walther. It says that rock layers show how the land changed. If one environment moves, its sediments pile up. This means one type of rock sits on another.

This helps us see how the world used to be. A man named Amanz Gressly first used this idea in 1838.
