In 1895, Faure became the seventh president of the French Third Republic. He was elected after the previous president resigned. This was a very difficult and famous event in French history. He faced criticism from people like Émile Zola during this time.

Faure died very suddenly on 16 February 1899. He was 58 years old. He suffered a stroke while he was at the Élysée Palace. He was in his study when he began to feel unwell. Doctors tried to help him, but they could not save him. He passed away at ten o'clock that night.
