Expansion card

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An expansion card is a special circuit board used to grow a computer's abilities.

These boards are often called adapter cards or peripheral cards. They allow a computer to do new tasks that it could not do before. For example, a computer used for simple math might need a special card for industrial control. Some cards can even help a computer talk to many tools at once. This makes a single machine very adaptable for different jobs.

To work, the card must connect to the computer's main board, called a motherboard. The card has metal contacts on one edge called an edge connector.

You slide this edge into a slot on the motherboard. This slot is also known as a bus slot. This connection lets electricity and data move between the card and the computer. Sometimes, a special card called a riser card is used. It lets cards sit parallel to the motherboard to save space.

Computer history shows how these boards have changed over time. Early vacuum-tube computers were very large and filled entire cabinets.

As integrated circuits were made, smaller cards became possible. The Micral N was the first microcomputer with expansion slots in 1973. Later, the Altair 8800 became very popular between 1974 and 1975. It used the S-100 bus, which many different companies used. This helped set a standard for how different parts could work together.

Many different types of slots and connections have been made. IBM introduced the ISA bus with the IBM PC in 1981. Later, the PCI bus arrived in 1991 to replace it. In 2005, PCI Express began replacing both PCI and AGP.

Laptops use smaller versions like Mini-PCI or ExpressCard. You can even use a Thunderbolt 3 cable to connect a laptop to a docking station.

This lets a small laptop use powerful cards like a big desktop computer.

Expansion cards connect to many things you might already know. Some cards act like "daughterboards" that plug into even larger boards.

You might see a sound card used to play music through speakers. Other cards might help a computer show high-quality video on a screen. Even some video game consoles use similar ideas to connect parts. This ability to add parts makes computers much more useful for everyone.
