These planets orbited a pulsar, which is a very dense star. The first detection around a main-sequence star happened in 1995 around the star 51 Pegasi.
Estimating the number of planets in our galaxy reveals how common they might be. There are about 200 billion stars in the Milky Way. If we assume about 50 billion of these are Sun-like stars, the numbers are huge. Scientists estimate that about 1 in 5 Sun-like stars has an Earth-sized planet in the habitable zone. This could mean there are 11 billion potentially habitable Earth-sized planets in our galaxy. If we include planets orbiting red dwarfs, that number could rise to 40 billion.
