Size is another big part of the puzzle. Scientists look for planets with a radius between 0.5 and 2.0 times that of Earth. The mass is also important for keeping an atmosphere. Probes later found Venus is a very hot world with an acidic atmosphere. Even Saturn's moon Titan shows some Earth-like traits. In 2007, scientists confirmed Titan has lakes and rivers.

This makes it a very interesting place to study.

Modern tools help us find these distant worlds. The Kepler space telescope began looking for planets in 2011. In 2015, scientists announced Kepler-452b was a near-Earth sized candidate.

On January 11, 2023, NASA found LHS 475 b. This was the first exoplanet found by the James Webb Space Telescope. Astronomers also found 24 "superhabitable" planet candidates in 2020. These are worlds that might be even better for life than Earth. On November 4, 2013, data suggested there could be 40 billion Earth-sized planets in our galaxy. These planets orbit Sun-like stars or red dwarf stars. Statistically, the nearest one might be only 12 light-years away.

Finding a true twin is hard because many things must work together. A planet needs the right weather, oceans, and air. It might even need a strong magnetosphere to stay safe.

Some scientists think we could one day change a planet to be like Earth. This process is called terraforming. Even the Moon helps Earth by creating tides. Other criteria include surface gravity, axial tilt, and a strong magnetosphere.

Temperature plays a vital role in habitability. Scientists examine the equilibrium temperature, which is the temperature of a planet without an atmosphere. They also consider the greenhouse effect, where an atmosphere traps heat. Finally, they look at the actual surface temperature.

For liquid water to exist, a planet must reside in the habitable zone. This is the area around a star where temperatures allow water to remain liquid on the surface. An ideal analog might also orbit a solar analog, which is a star similar to our Sun. However, stars like TRAPPIST-1, which is much smaller and dimmer, can still host Earth-like planets in their habitable zones.

Our understanding of other worlds has changed significantly through history. Between 1858 and 1920, researchers like Giovanni Schiaparelli and Percival Lowell believed Mars was much like Earth.

These geological processes help scientists understand how Earth-like environments might operate on other distant worlds.

Modern technology has accelerated the search for these distant worlds. The Kepler space telescope began observing potential terrestrial planets in 2011. In 2015, scientists announced the discovery of Kepler-452b, a near-Earth sized candidate orbiting a solar candidate.
