It is often seen as a symbol of his right to rule Britain. Many different tales describe how the sword was found or used. Some stories say it has magical powers that help the king. Others focus on how it proves Arthur is the true heir to the throne. This famous weapon has become a central part of Arthurian legends for many centuries.

There are two main ways people say Arthur got his sword. In one famous version, a sword is stuck in an anvil on top of a stone.

Only the true king can pull it out easily. A young Arthur does this by accident while acting as a squire. In another tradition, a Lady of the Lake gives Arthur a sword.

Some writers, like Thomas Malory, use the name Excalibur for both of these different weapons.

The history of the name is quite interesting and very old. The name likely comes from ancient Welsh words.

Early Welsh stories call the sword Caledfwlch. A writer named Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote about the sword in a Latin book. He used the name Caliburnus. Over time, as stories moved through Europe, the name changed many times. It went from names like Calibourc and Escalibor to the familiar Excalibur we use today.

Excalibur is described with many amazing details in different books. Some stories say the blade is so bright it blinds enemies. It might shine as brightly as thirty torches at once.

The sword's cover, called a scabbard, was also very special. It was said to stop a person from bleeding during a fight. This made the scabbard a huge treasure for the king. Some legends even say the sword was forged in a place called Avalon.

At the end of the legends, the sword is returned to the water.

Finally, he throws it in, and a hand reaches out from the water to catch it. This powerful moment marks the end of a great era in the stories. It shows how the magic of the sword always returns to its source.
