As time passed, birds changed to stay light. They lost their long bony tails. Instead, they grew a short tail called a pygostyle. This tail is made of feathers. They also lost their teeth. They grew beaks instead. This helped them fly better.

Long ago, a big event changed the Earth. This event is called the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction. Many kinds of birds died out. But four groups survived. These groups led to the birds we see today. Birds are amazing living things that belong to a group called Aves. They are actually part of a larger group of reptiles called Archosauria. This group also includes crocodiles, which are their closest living relatives. For a long time, people thought a small dinosaur called Archaeopteryx was the very first bird. Now, scientists know that birds evolved from a group of dinosaurs called theropods. These dinosaurs lived during the Jurassic Period.

How did birds change from dinosaurs to the animals we see today? It was a slow way it works involving many small changes. One big change was losing heavy parts to stay light for flight. Early birds lost their long, bony tails. They replaced them with a short bone called a pygostyle. This new tail was covered in feathers instead of bone. They also lost their teeth and grew light beaks.

Many important discoveries have helped us understand this history. In the 19th century, Thomas Huxley noted how hard it was to define a bird. He saw that some creatures had teeth and some had clawed hands. Later, fossils found in Liaoning Province, China, showed many small dinosaurs had feathers. Some of these, like Sinornithosaurus, were very close to birds. Other fossils like Cryptovolans show that some dinosaurs could already fly.

History shows that a huge event changed everything 66 million years ago. This was the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. Many types of birds died out during this time. However, four distinct lineages survived to become modern birds. These include the Palaeognathae, which are relatives of the ostrich. There are also waterfowl like ducks and ground-living fowl. The largest group of survivors is called Neoaves.

Today, we can see the results of this long journey everywhere. Some birds, like the ostrich, are large and cannot fly. Others, like the house sparrow, are small and very agile. Scientists use DNA and fossils to study how these groups split apart. Some studies suggest the split happened about 95 million years ago. Others think it happened even earlier. This helps us see how birds filled the world after the big extinction.

This group includes dinosaurs like dromaeosaurs and oviraptorids. Understanding this history helps us see how life adapts to new environments.

The transition from dinosaurs to birds involved many physical changes. One major trend was the reduction of heavy parts to save weight. Early birds lost their long, bony tails first. They replaced these with a short bone called a pygostyle. This structure allowed feathers to take over tail functions. Many early birds also had teeth and clawed hands. Different groups of birds show how these changes happened. The Enantiornithes were a large group that flourished during the Mesozoic. They had wings like modern birds but kept clawed hands and teeth. In the Cretaceous, more modern birds appeared. These birds had a rigid ribcage with a carina, or keel. This keel allowed for much stronger upstrokes during flight. They also developed an alula, which is a small part of the wing used for control. Some, like the Hesperornithiformes, even became flightless divers.

Discoveries in China have changed how we view dinosaur evolution. Fossils found in Liaoning Province show many small theropods had feathers. This includes species like Sinosauropteryx and Sinornithosaurus. These finds make the line between reptiles and birds harder to define. The fossil Cryptovolans also showed signs of powered flight. It had a sternal keel and ribs with uncinate processes. This suggests that flight may have developed in early dromaeosaurids rather than later in Aves.

For a long time, the small dinosaur Archaeopteryx was called the first bird. It lived during the Late Jurassic period. While it is a famous "missing link," it may not be a direct ancestor. It likely acted more like a competent glider. Scientists still debate the exact relationship between Archaeopteryx and modern birds. Some researchers define Aves by their connection to modern species like the house sparrow. Others use the larger group term Avialae to include various prehistoric species.

Some studies suggest the split between major bird groups happened 95 million years ago. Other genomic studies suggest the divergence happened even earlier, around 130 million years ago. The rapid growth of Neoaves may have been triggered by the ecological opportunities after the mass extinction. This allowed birds to diversify into the many forms we see today.
