Evert Taube was a highly influential Swedish singer, composer, and writer. He is widely recognized as the most important troubadour of the Swedish ballad tradition during the 20th century. A troubadour is a person who composes and performs songs that often tell stories. Taube's work is respected for its ability to capture both the beauty of nature and the complexities of human experience. His music connects the Swedish landscape to global rhythms, making him a central figure in Swedish cultural history.

Taube's creative process was deeply rooted in his extensive travels and observations. Between 1907 and 1909, he sailed around the Red Sea, Ceylon, and South Africa. During this period, he acted as a collector of sailors' songs. This experience shaped his early career as a singer-songwriter. He performed his first known song, "Turalleri, piken fra Hamburg," on a Norwegian ship in 1908. These early maritime experiences provided the foundation for his many sea-themed ballads.

His time in South America significantly expanded his musical vocabulary. Taube lived in Argentina for five years, from 1910 to 1915. While many believe he worked as a gaucho, or cowboy, he actually served as a foreman. In this role, he supervised workers who were digging canals to prevent flooding on the Pampas plains. This period allowed him to develop a deep interest in Latin American music. Consequently, he is credited with introducing the Argentinian tango to Sweden during the 1920s.

Taube's songwriting covered a wide range of emotional and social themes. He was a master of the idyllic, writing about the Swedish archipelagoes and the Mediterranean. Many Swedes find his depictions of these places very recognizable. However, his work was not always lighthearted. In the late 1930s, he wrote "Målaren och Maria Pia," a powerful anti-fascist and anti-war poem regarding the Italian war in Abyssinia. He also contributed to the environmental movement in the 1970s. His song "Änglamark," written for the 1971 film "The Apple War," became an anthem for nature conservation.

Several key figures helped preserve and organize Taube's vast literary legacy. In 1962, he met Inga-Britt Fredholm at the Park Avenue Hotel in Gothenburg. She served as his literary secretary for over ten years. During the 1964–1965 period, she traveled with him to Antibes, France, and the Pampas in Argentina. Fredholm collected his stories and published them in eight volumes titled "Samlade berättelser med tillhörande visor och ballader" between 1966 and 1967. She also produced two pictorial biographies of Taube in 1970 and 1972.

Taube received numerous prestigious honors throughout his long career. In 1950, the Swedish Academy presented him with the Bellman Award on his 60th birthday. The University of Gothenburg granted him an honorary doctorate in 1960. He was also elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 1970. His influence is so great that his portrait was chosen to appear on the Swedish 50 kronor banknote starting in 2014–15. Additionally, a dedicated pavilion named "Evert Taube's World" opened at Liseberg Theme Park in 2008.

His musical legacy continues through his family and international translations. His son, Sven-Bertil Taube, became a famous musician and actor who performed his father's songs. Taube's work has reached an international audience through various English translations. These include works by Helen Asbury, Paul Britten Austin, and Emily Melcher. His songs have been recorded by international artists such as Roger Whittaker. Today, his life is commemorated through sculptures, such as the bronze statue in Gothenburg, and even on the tail of a Norwegian Air Shuttle Boeing 737.
