Behind the head was the opisthosoma, or the abdomen. This section consisted of 12 segments. It could be divided into a mesosoma and a metasoma, or a preabdomen and a postabdomen. The very end of the body was the telson. In many species, the telson was shaped like a blade. In some groups, such as the Pterygotioidea, the telson was flattened to act as a rudder for swimming. Some species, like Eusarcana, had telsons that looked like those of modern scorpions. These may have been used to inject venom.
Eurypterids used different appendages for different tasks. The second through sixth pairs of appendages were generally walking legs. These legs had segments called coxae, which often featured tooth-like plates called gnathobases for feeding. In the suborder Eurypterina, the sixth pair of legs was modified into wide swimming paddles. These allowed the animals to move through aquatic environments. Other groups, the Stylonurina, had long, slender legs instead of paddles. These legs were better suited for walking on the sea floor.
Size varied greatly among the different species of eurypterids. The smallest known species, Alkenopterus, was only 1 centimeter long. However, the group included the largest arthropods to ever live. The genus Jaekelopterus is the most famous example. Some estimates suggest Jaekelopterus could reach 2.5 meters in length. If you include its long chelicerae, its total reach might have been even greater. Other giants included Pterygotus and Acutiramus. These large animals often had a lightweight build. This lightweight construction helped them manage the energy costs of moving and breathing.
Evidence suggests that eurypterids were more than just ocean dwellers. Some studies indicate they possessed a dual respiratory system. They had gill tracts, or branchial chambers, located on the underside of the opisthosoma. They also had oval or triangular organs that may have helped them breathe air. This could have allowed them to spend short periods in terrestrial environments. In Scotland, scientists found a fossil trackway attributed to the genus Hibbertopterus. This trackway is the largest terrestrial trackway ever made by an arthropod. It shows that some eurypterids could walk on land using a slow, jerky gait.
Throughout history, eurypterids were found across many different environments. While most were marine, many later forms lived in fresh or brackish water. Fossils have been recovered from every continent on Earth. Most specimens are found in North America and Europe. This is because many species lived near the ancient supercontinent of Laurasia. A few genera, such as Adelophthalmus and Pterygotus, were cosmopolitan, meaning they lived all over the world. The group faced major challenges during the Late Devonian extinction event. They eventually became extinct during the Permian–Triassic extinction event, about 251.9 million years ago.
