He used X-ray microtomography to examine the fossil and identified it as a mygalomorph spider. He believed the wide, circular eye tubercle and the shape of the carapace supported this. At the time, it was thought to be a giant spider with a leg-span of 60 centimeters. This error led to many museum displays showing Megarachne as a massive arachnid.

However, later researchers noted that the fossil had features, like specific cuticular ornamentation, that no spider possesses.

A major breakthrough occurred in 2005 when a second, more complete specimen was discovered.

A research team led by Paul A. Selden re-examined the original holotype using this new evidence. They concluded that Megarachne was actually a eurypterid. This new classification was supported by the presence of raised lunules and specific mucrones on the carapace. These features are characteristic of eurypterids rather than spiders. Even though the initial identification was wrong, the two groups are closely related. This discovery corrected the scientific record and provided a clearer picture of the animal's true nature.

The significance of Megarachne lies in its completeness and its environment. The fossils were recovered from the Bajo de Véliz Formation in San Luis, Argentina. This site represents a freshwater floodplain from the Late Carboniferous.
