Young fish live in groups called schools. They eat small things like prawns and crabs. As they grow up, they change how they live. Adult fish are less social. They prefer to eat other small fish.

These fish grow very slowly. It takes many years to reach adulthood. They also move with the seasons. They go to different waters to spawn. Spawning is when fish make babies.

Many people catch or farm this fish. In the Mediterranean Sea, it is a very important fish to farm. Turkey is the biggest producer in the world. Some people call it branzino. It has a sweet taste and white meat.

It belongs to a family called Moronidae, which are known as temperate basses. You can find these fish in the Atlantic Ocean near Norway and Senegal. They also live in the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.

However, you will not find them in the Baltic Sea. This fish is famous in many places around the world. In North America, people often call it by its Italian name, branzino.

Young fish live in groups called schools. They spend their time eating small things like prawns and crabs. As they get older, they become less social. Adult seabass prefer to eat other fish like sardines or sand eels. They also move with the seasons to find better water. They move to different areas to spawn, which is how they make babies. Most of this happens between February and June.

Scientists have studied this fish for a long time.

A Swedish scientist named Carl Linnaeus first described it in 1758. He originally gave it the name Perca labrax. Later, the name Dicentrarchus labrax became the official name in 1987. The name Dicentrarchus comes from Greek words. It refers to the two spines near the fish's rear. This history helps us understand how we name living things.

There are many interesting facts about how big these fish get.

A common adult is usually about half of the maximum size. They can grow to be quite large in weight and length. There are also two different groups of these fish in the wild. One group lives in the northeast Atlantic Ocean. The other group lives in the western Mediterranean Sea. These two groups are separated by a place called the Almeria-Oran oceanographic front.

Many people around the world eat and farm this fish.

It is the most important fish farmed in the Mediterranean Sea. Turkey is currently the biggest producer of seabass in the world. Other countries like Greece, Italy, and Egypt also farm them. People like the fish because it has sweet, white meat. In restaurants, it is often roasted and served with lemon. This makes the seabass a very popular meal for many people.

The European seabass, known scientifically as *Dicentrarchus labrax*, is a significant marine fish.

It belongs to the Moronidae family, which includes six species called temperate basses. This fish is found in the Atlantic Ocean, from Norway down to Senegal. It also lives throughout the Mediterranean and southern Black Seas.

However, it is notably absent from the Baltic Sea. The species is highly valued for both commercial fishing and aquaculture, which is the practice of farming aquatic animals. In the Mediterranean, it is the most important fish currently being cultured.

The life cycle of the European seabass involves several distinct stages and movements.

It begins as a larva, a stage that can last up to three months. During this time, the larvae cannot swim well. As they develop into juveniles, they move into estuaries and lagoons. In these shallow waters, they form schools and feed on invertebrates like prawns and crabs. As they mature into adults, they become less social. Adults often move offshore during the winter and return to coastal areas in the summer. They are also seasonal migrators, moving toward spawning grounds at least one month before the season begins.

Dietary habits change as the fish grows. Juvenile seabass focus on small creatures like crustaceans. Adults, however, prefer to hunt other fish. They eat pelagic fish, which live in the open water, such as sardines and sprats. They also eat demersal fish, which live near the bottom, such as sand eels. Their diet can also include cephalopods like squid and polychaetes. Interestingly, larger adults weighing more than 1 kg are often night hunters. Spawning typically occurs between February and June in inshore waters.

Scientific study of the seabass has a long history.

The Swedish zoologist Carl Linnaeus first described the species in 1758. He originally named it *Perca labrax* in his work *Systema Naturae*. Over the next 150 years, the fish was classified under many different names. In 1987, *Dicentrarchus labrax* became the accepted scientific name. The name *Dicentrarchus* comes from Greek roots. "Di" means two, "kentron" means sting, and "archos" refers to the anus. This name describes the two anal spines found on the fish.

There is a fascinating mystery regarding the wild populations of this fish.

Scientists have identified two genetically distinct populations. One group lives in the northeast Atlantic Ocean. The other group lives in the western Mediterranean Sea. These populations are separated by the Almeria-Oran oceanographic front near Almería, Spain. Even though the distance is narrow, there is no gene flow between them. This is surprising because larvae can be moved by water flow, and adults can migrate hundreds of kilometers. Juveniles can even survive changes in temperature and salinity.

Human interaction with the seabass is massive, especially in the fishing industry.

In the Atlantic, annual catches usually range between 8,500 and 11,900 tonnes. France often reports the highest catches in this region. In the Mediterranean, Egypt has surpassed Italy in catch reports. Because of commercial pressure, the species is listed as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. In Ireland, strict laws protect the fish. Commercial fishing is banned, and recreational anglers must follow rules regarding season, size, and daily limits. Data from 2011–2012 showed the total biomass was 32% lower than in previous years.

Aquaculture has become a major part of the seabass industry. Farming began in coastal lagoons and tidal reservoirs long ago. However, mass-production techniques were developed in the late 1960s. By 2010, annual production exceeded 120,000 tonnes. Turkey is currently the world's largest producer. Other major farming nations include Greece, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Croatia, and Egypt. People enjoy eating the fish because of its sweet taste and flaky white texture. In many cultures, it is a popular dish, such as the Italian *branzino* or the French *loup de mer*.
