Red mullets are a group of fish belonging to the Mullidae family. These fish are commonly known as goatfish. They are found in several specific bodies of water. You can find them in the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. They also live in the eastern part of the North Atlantic Ocean. While the name "red mullet" is used widely, it can be a bit confusing. In many languages, the names for these fish overlap. This makes it hard to tell exactly which species is being discussed. However, they are distinct from the grey mullet family, known as Mugilidae. Even though the names are similar, these two families are not closely related.
There are two primary species that people call red mullets. The first is Mullus barbatus. The second species is Mullus surmuletus. You can tell them apart if you look closely at their bodies. Mullus surmuletus has a striped first dorsal fin. The dorsal fin is the fin located on the back of the fish. Because of this feature, people sometimes call it the striped red mullet. The name "surmullet" actually comes from the French language. It likely traces back to a Germanic root word, "sor." This ancient word means reddish brown, which describes the color of the fish.
These fish have been highly valued by humans for many centuries. In the Mediterranean, they are considered delicious delicacies. Both species are very similar in many ways. Because of this, they are usually cooked using the same methods. Some people believe that Mullus surmuletus is even more prized than Mullus barbatus.
In ancient Roman times, the luxury surrounding these fish was quite extreme. Romans would rear red mullets in special ponds. Owners did not just keep them for food; they treated them like pets. Owners would caress the fish and attend to them closely. They even went so far as to train the fish. The fish were taught to come to their keepers at the sound of a voice or a bell.
Because of their value, red mullets appear in many historical accounts. The statesman Titus Annius Milo was exiled to Marseille in 52 B.C. Even in exile, he claimed he would have no regrets. He said this as long as he could eat the delicious red mullet of Marseille.
Red mullets also held a sacred place in ancient religious beliefs. Claudius Aelianus wrote that the species was sacred to Demeter. Demeter was the Greek goddess of agriculture. At Eleusis, the fish were honored by those who were initiated into religious rites. There were two main reasons for this honor. Some believed it was because the fish gives birth three times in a single year. Others believed it was because the fish eats the Sea-Hare. The Sea-Hare is a creature that can be deadly to humans.
Understanding the red mullet helps us see how nature and human culture mix. These fish are not just biological organisms in the sea. They have shaped food traditions and religious stories for thousands of years. From the ponds of Rome to the myths of Greece, the red mullet has been a constant presence. They connect the natural world of the Mediterranean to the history of human civilization.
