The European Investment Bank, or EIB, is a very large financial group. It is owned by the 27 member states of the European Union.

This bank is the largest multilateral financial institution in the whole world. It helps fund big projects that meet the goals of the European Union. The EIB uses loans, equity, and guarantees to do this work. It focuses on important areas like the climate and the environment. It also supports small businesses and helps build new infrastructure.

The bank works in a very specific way to help people. It does not get money from the EU budget. Instead, it raises money by issuing bonds in international markets. The EIB has a triple-A rating from three big agencies. These are Moody's, Standard and Poor's, and Fitch. This high rating means the bank is very trustworthy. Each member state pays money into the bank's reserves. This payment is based on how much money each country's economy makes.

The story of the EIB began many years ago. It was founded by the Treaty of Rome. This treaty came into force on January 1, 1958. At first, the bank mostly gave loans for infrastructure in Europe. In 1962, it was allowed to help projects outside the European Community. That community included Italy, France, West Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The bank even gave its first loans to companies in Sicily and Lucania. In 1968, the bank moved its main office to Luxembourg City.

Over the decades, the bank has grown quite a lot. From 1958 to 2018, it invested over 1.1 trillion euros. It is active in 140 different countries around the globe. About 10% of its work happens outside of the European Union. In 2007, the EIB became a world leader in green finance. It was the first institution to issue green bonds. These bonds help raise money for renewable energy and efficiency. By 2030, the bank plans to invest 1 trillion euros in climate projects.

You might recognize the EIB from its work during hard times. The bank provided money during the 2008 financial crisis. It also helped many people during the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, it provided 200 billion euros in extra financing. This money helped with healthcare, research, and vaccines. The bank also helps with development aid and cooperation policies. It works closely with the European Commission and the European Parliament. This teamwork helps make the economy stronger for everyone.
