Eucalyptol

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Eucalyptol is a clear liquid that people often call cineole. It has a fresh smell that is like camphor. It also has a taste that feels spicy and cool. This substance makes up most of eucalyptus oil. In fact, it is 70% to 90% of that oil.

It does not mix well with water. However, it can mix with other organic solvents. It is a very useful part of the natural world.

Nature has a special way to make eucalyptol. It starts from a substance called geranyl pyrophosphate, or GPP. This GPP changes into something called (S)-linalyl diphosphate. Then, a part called cineole synthase helps the process. This part helps create the eucalyptol we find in plants. During this change, an alpha-terpinyl cation is used as a middle step.

We have known about this liquid for a long time. A man named F. S. Cloez identified it in 1870. He gave the name "eucalyptol" to the main part of oil from the Eucalyptus globulus tree. Since then, scientists have learned much more about it. They found it in many different types of plants. These plants include rosemary and ginger and even camphor laurel.

People use eucalyptol in many different products today. It is a common ingredient in mouthwash and cough medicine. Some foods use a tiny amount, like 0.002%, to add flavor. This includes things like baked goods, meat, and drinks. It is also used in perfumes and cosmetics.

Some companies even add it to cigarettes to change the flavor. It can also act as a way to keep insects away.

Even though it smells nice, we must use it carefully. Swallowing large amounts can cause headaches or make you feel sick. It can also be hard on your lungs. Because it is a thin liquid, it can enter the lungs easily. This can cause very serious injury or even death.

You should never swallow it unless it is very diluted. It should not be used on children under two years old. It is also not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
