It is the second largest Greek island. It is also the sixth largest in the Mediterranean Sea. A narrow strip of water separates it from the mainland. This is called the Euripus Strait. At its narrowest point, it is only 40 meters wide.

The water in the strait is very strange. The currents move very fast. Sometimes the water flows one way like a river. Then it quickly changes and flows the other way.

The island is long and narrow. It has many mountains.

The north part is green with many forests. The middle part is also mountainous. The south part of the island is dry and bare. The weather is usually hot in the summer. The winters are cool and wet. Many people lived in the old cities of Chalcis and Eretria. These cities were very powerful a long time ago.
