She is a member of the Southern Ndebele people. Her work features bold, large-scale contemporary paintings. These pieces are inspired by her Ndebele heritage. She is recognized as one of South Africa's most famous artists. Her art carries the history of her people into the modern world. She uses geometric patterns to share her cultural identity.

To create her art, Mahlangu uses specific traditional methods. She often uses a paintbrush made from chicken feathers. Her signature designs feature white-bounded lines. These lines are arranged in diagonal or chevron patterns. These shapes are inspired by Ndebele clothing and jewelry. Traditionally, Ndebele mural art is painted on adobe walls. Mahlangu adapted this style to new surfaces. She now paints on canvas and metal alloys. She even signs her beadwork using beads to form her initials, "EM."

Mahlangu's work includes many different types of media. She creates large murals and intricate beadwork. She has also moved into commercial design and automotive art. In 1991, she created a BMW Art Car. This was a BMW 525i model. It was the first BMW Art Car by a woman. It was also the first by a non-Western artist. She has also designed sneakers and even a Product Red vodka bottle. These collaborations show how her traditional patterns can fit many modern objects.

Her journey began in the Mpumalanga region of South Africa. She was born on November 11, 1935. She was the eldest of nine children. Her mother and grandmother taught her to paint. This happened when she was only ten years old. In Ndebele tradition, girls learn to paint to decorate their homes. This preparation happens before they marry. Between 1980 and 1991, she lived at the Botshabelo Historical Village. This was an open-air museum for Ndebele culture.

Mahlangu gained global recognition in 1989. She participated in the Magiciens de la terre exhibition in Paris. This event highlighted contemporary art from non-Western countries. Researchers from the French Embassy saw her work in 1986. They visited her home to see her paintings. In Paris, organizers built a full-scale replica of her house. She painted this replica before thousands of people. By 1990, she had exhibited in more than 12 countries.

In 2020, she painted a custom interior for a Rolls-Royce Phantom. This included a "gallery" in the dashboard for artwork. In 2024, she worked on the i5 Flow Nostokana concept car. This car uses E Ink technology to change colors. This technology allows the Ndebele designs to shift. Her work is now held in many major international collections.

Mahlangu's impact reaches into education and honors. She established a self-funded art school in her backyard. This school teaches Ndebele painting to new artists. In 2024, an art studio opened at her home in Mpumalanga. She has received many honorary degrees from various universities. One degree was an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics. This was for her artistic career and mathematical prowess. She also received the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver in 2006. Her life connects ancient traditions to modern global systems.
