Haeckel also explored the intersection of science and philosophy. He was a leading proponent of monism, a view that seeks to find a single underlying principle for the universe. He argued that science and religion could be reconciled through a naturalistic understanding of the world. He founded the Monist League in 1906 to promote this worldview. His writings, such as *The Riddles of the Universe*, attempted to explain the origins of life and the cosmos. He even used the term "world riddle" to describe these grand scientific mysteries.
